Default MS (WinXP) Networking Problem

A couple of years ago, post WinXPSP1, I remember that everyone trying to network in Windows XP had the problem of either not seeing, or being able to access resources on other WinXP networked computers. Running along to the MSDN and looking up the knoledge base I found that to sort out these "aparent problems" (I'd call it a bug in MS Networking protocols) that you had to install the additional NetBIOS/IPx..... etc protocol set. This really shouldn't have been needed if the "aparent problem" wasn't there so I was wondering if anyone here knew if this bug has been sorted out with the release of SP2 and WindowsMCE 2005 and WindowsXP 64bit.

It's just I'm going to try out a big kickass Lan party and want no problems what-so-ever, it's complicated including linux servers for games and for serving the patches and all and if SP2 don't have this problem, this could make the whole operation a lot smoother
