Default Mouse wont select

Hi guys, I've just switched my other computer on, haven't used it for a few weeks, and found the mouse moves but cannot select anything, had to pull the power plug out to switch it off, thanks

What kind of mouse? USB,Ps2 or Serial? Laser or ball?

Its a M,soft usb optical, also connected a Dell optical usb, computer found the new hardware, and the same problem, my machine a old Packard Bell iconnect 866 mainly used for scanning photos and slides.

go into msconfig and somehow tick of things such as things your not using, id start with defualt, their is a windows registry key that is conflicting somewhere, try download ccleaner and run that and then run the registry one.

i think you might need to turn of tablet PC pen recognition in msconfig

I did my lolly by pulling the power plug out of the computer, switched it on 6 hours later and its working, I will plug it into the internet and up date my AVG 8, thanks guys.
