You will probably be able to notice a difference between 1680x1050 and the next lowest resolution, assuming you're using a 256MB video card. If you're using 512+, there will probably be no difference, as more RAM helps a lot with higher resolutions. How big a difference though, I don't know, I'm sorry to say.

I'd get an ATi Radeon X1950 XT (or PRO) which is a top performing Direct 9 card.

yep gotta be a new vid card, if you said 512mb ram i may have been a bit unsure but 1gb is perfectly fine for gaming, so id get a new card and maybe upgrade to 2gb+ when you can afford it

Yes 1gb is perfectly fine for XP, 2gb is only really needed for intense gaming in XP or when using Vista.
