monitor upgade

My computer display registers 1440x900 pixels. I currently have a 17 inch monitor.
If I were to upgrade to a widescreen monitor with HD, would I require additional hard ware to run the new monitor?

You should be fine.

The only reason you might need new hardware is for dual monitors or things like 4K
