Monitor question

whats there to look for in a monitor? besides having an DVI, screen size, resolution.
My friend has an Samsung Syncmaster 710N, and my school has an Samsung Syncmaster 740N. Both on VGA (with DVI adapter), 17", and same resolution (1280x1024). Yet, my friends display is really crappy, while the one at my school looks crisp and clean like my monitor which is on DVI. The only difference between those 2 is that my friend uses an 8800GT, while the school uses the X1300 i think.
My friend wants to get a new monitor because my display is always better and looks nicer than his.
So i was wondering what does that.

huh... i dont think i have seen dpi on the specs, unless im missing it somehow.
So what makes the monitor look better? (in VGA vs VGA)
