Default Mobility X700 vs Geforce Go 6600 for a notebook

I've looked at benchmarks for both and I'm confused.

I'm going to be running several games on the lappy, but which GPU should I choose? Both are 128Mb by the way, and there's a chance I could get a Go 6600 PCI-E instead of AGP or whatever standard notebook GPU's use.

The 6600 is a vanilla 6600 - not a GT or an Ultra, just plain 6600.

The lappy will have 1024MB DDR (maybe DDR2/3, can't remember).

I'd possibly be playing, at some time or another, stuff like:

Rome Total War
C&C Generals
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3
SimCity 4
HL2/FarCry/UT2k4
Other games including FreeCiv

I'd also be coding (maybe some 3D stuff), listening to music, watching DVD's, the usual stuff. The above mentioned games run fine on my FX5200 256Mb desktop card (I've only got Total War and Generals from that list, Rome can get a bit jittery during large battles and online, but mostly perfectly playable)

My big question: How will either of these cards cope with BF2? It'll most probably be the most demanding game my lappy will run.
I can run BF2 on my crappy 5200 with most settings on low, and I get 21fps on average, but it's got a P4 3.2GHZ HTT and 512MB DDR.

Obviously these cards are better than that.

Once I've chosen a GPU, I can finally buy a laptop. So which should I choose?

Very sorry for the near constant new threads, I really am. I'll stop once I can draw a conclusion from this

It should run fine with BF2 on anything other than all-out max settings. Is the GeForce G0 6600 PCI-E or is it AGP? I know the X700 is native PCI-E, so that won't matter that much. Either way, can you post the full specs of the notebooks you're planning to buy. Thanks.

OK, here's the one with the Go 6600:

XP Pro
Intel Pentium M-770 @ 2.13Ghz
1GB DDR2 RAM
128Mb nVidia GeForce Go 6600 (AGP)
100 Gb HDD @ 5400rpm

I could get the 6600 PCI-E for about 150 more, but that puts the price up to about 1450 (US$2593)

And the one with the X700:

XP Pro
Intel Pentium M-760 @ 2.0Ghz
1GB DDR2 RAM
100 Gb HDD
128Mb Mobility Radeon X700 (PCI-E)

That one's 1374 (US$2457).

Hope that helps, which would you say is the better card based on that?

(Could I sacrifice the 130Mhz clock difference for a better GPU?)

It's for a laptop, and Newegg doesn't ship to the UK, unfortunately.

If it were a desktop PC, that's what I'd do without even having to think about it

If I had the money, I would go with the Go 6600 and upgrade it to a 6600 PCI-E for the extra bandwidth. 130mhz won't make the difference between life or death, but it certainly helps.

Thanks for your help.

I'm going with the X700 because:
  • People say it's better
  • It seems to be getting better benchmarks for most things
  • It's cheaper
  • It's native PCI-E instead of paying extra
  • It handles shaders better
  • The Go 6600 is far too inferior to the GT to justify the very small saving I would make
  • Similar nVidia performance would cost my house and soul to get it

Cool. Yeah, I guess that would work if I was in that situation. Have fun!
