Default Microsoft Academic Pricing Packages

Anyone know what the scoop is on these packages?
Does MS check to see if you qualify for special pricing? How would they?
Can you get yourself in trouble if you aren't actually a student?
The prices are about 1/2 of normal..........

There are a bunch of on-line stores selling these products with no verification that I can see.

What gives?

Wow Vista Home Premium or $90! I wanna buy it but I'm scared that its not like Vista, like it will have more stuff with it and make you take tests or something.
