Default microphone not wroking

I brought an old microphone from home with me but it doesn't. I plug it into the michrophone jack and the computer recognizes that I connected an audio utility, at which point I select that it's a microphone. All the important volume bars are up to the max, the bass boost is on, microphone is selected, and not muted (and yes its connected to the proper jack, aside from the fact that ive tried all the possible jacks)

So then i figured maybe this old mircophone is broken so I went and bought a new headset/microphone thing at the store. Same thing happens tho! I plug it in, it recognizes a microphone, i click OK, then select the microphone in the volume control panel.....

I tried recording soemthing with the windows sound recorder, but it told me that no signal was being recieved. Is this a problem with my sound card then, and if so what am I supposed to do.

thanks in advance
