Default Memory Timings?

What exactly are memory timings? how do they affect performance? and what should i tweak mine to? i have it set to auto so it changes as i overclock.

The latencies or timings are the time required for the memory to change rows/columns etc. Obviously, the lower, the better. I see you have Corsair XMS2 memory. Some kits run at 5-5-5-15 timings whereas some of the more expensive stuff runs at 4-4-4-12 timings.
