ME XP upgrade problems

Hi,
I'm new here and I'm wondering if anyone could help. I just did an upgrade from XP CD from ME. It now locks up after I try to install my new printer. People say I should of did a fresh/clean install of XP. I did not. It said recommended upgrade on start up of XP. What next?

You've brought an XP Upgrade CD, or a Full XP CD?

Because Upgrading to XP from Me won't work - you'll need to format it and install it from a fuill XP CD. Unless you have a full Windows 200 CD? Then you can format the PC, install 2000, and upgrade to XP - that'll work.
