Default Maxtor One Touch II Firewire/USB External Harddrive Failure...

...so here's what happened:

The LED light on the front button blinks very rapidly when turned on, but the disk still spins. It doesn't appear on the "My Computer" roster... is there anyway I can retreive the information without going to a service center?

The light is supposed to blink rapidly when the disk turns on. It's displaying disk activity. Maybe I missed the problem? Specs please, and elaborate for me, thanks.

It's more than just rapidly, it's blinking incredibly fast.

My light blinks very fast too. Is this unusual? It could just be an issue with the front bezel indicators. Do some hd tests and see if itís your hd. If data is slowing down, games loading, etc. it might be your hd. But if itís just your light and everything else seems fine, I wouldnít be too worried. http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Hope this helps.

Make sure connections are all good. BIOS should be checked too. See if it's being recognized there. Check disk properties just in case windows is doing something funny and it combines them. Try different connections, etc.

BIOS? I've tried different connections, and connectivity reads green across the board.

Check BIOS to see if the drive is being read or found.

How can I check that? Take into mind that you're talking to a real comp n00b here.

In your other thread, you talk about setting up raid. raid is so much harder compared to this. Check BIOS. press f10, f8, f2, or delete when you see your comp's first screen. Go into BIOS. Check around drives, hardware, etc. and see if it's there. Try using only one drive and see if your comp actually get's past POST.

Hmm... in the startup screen, I see everything detected that's connected... my linksys wireless, optical drives... but no maxtor.

NOTE: This isn't the bios screen, however.

Single out each drive and see if you get past POST.

In the BIOS screen? And what is POST? Forgive me for my lack of knowledge in this field.

This is BIOS.

POST is (Power On Self Test) a series of built-in diagnostics performed by the BIOS in a PC when the computer is first started.
Hope this helps.

I greatly appreciate your help... the Power On Self Test, where can I find that, based upon the picture you took? Sorry for being such a bother.

That happend to me wiht my system drive (was not coming up in My Computer) Check the device manager if it still shows up there then run EZ Recovery by OnTrack that recoverd about 95% of my data.

It just happens. You can't really find it. WHenever you boot your comp, BIOS performs POST. Try integrated peripherals, etc.

Alright, I was able to get to the BIOS screen... the BIOS utility, but it did not look like the picture you posted. As soon as I exited, the test occurred automatically, but for a different disk, my flash drive, not my external hard drive.

Yes, it's external... both USB and Firewire, butr I have it set to USB. I tried both, and correctly installed the drivers... by the way, in the hardware list, it's listed as problematic, and the reason stated is that it "fails to start up". That's a problem I can't fix alone, right?
