Default Maxtor External Hard Drives

I bought a Maxtor external hard drive and use it for backing up data. As a precaution I bought another to duplicate the back up just in case the original failed. Although all the marketing information says you can join two Maxtors together there is nothing in the manual provided.

Does anybody have any experience of joining two Maxtors together ?

Also does the Retrospect software's catalogue file need to be on the Maxtor drive itself ?

The Retrospect software is mainly used to make back-up at given time or interval, so if you have two back-ups, you can just program them at separate times.
The software should be installed on the PC or server that is gonna generate the data to the external hard disk. The Retrospect website has more detailed info about that.
