UT2K is not the only game ill be playing on it, its just thats the most advanced game i have right now and i can only play that every other week at my dads. Once i get a new comptuer at my moms which i can use everyday ill probly get like alot of high end games from today and in years to come so i want to make sure i don't end up with a computer that will be outdated in like a year plus having SLI now will let me upgrade the graphics alot easyer and effectivly in like 3 years from now because instead of buying a new card and throwing the old 1 out i can put them together..........i think? lol

Default Re: making a gaming pc

ok guys so far this is what im thinking:

Processer: AMD athlon 4000+ ||550.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?EdpNo=1103943
could some1 fill me in about what a winchester processer is and whats the difference from a normal one?

MOBO: MSI neo4 SLI platinum edition ||190.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...218400&CatId=0

Graphics card: Nvidia 6800 ultra 512mb with 500mw PSU ||900.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...018%20FREE%20X
This 512mb card is actually cheaper then buying 2 256mb 6800 ultras and this comes with a free PSU which i can sell to get some money back if i get a better power supply. The only thing is because its only 1 card SLI would have no effect until i bought a second card later which i probly will. Would this card be just as good as 2 256mb cards on SLI tho?

Memory: Corsair 1x1024mb PC3200 400MHz DDR ||120.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?EdpNo=1170139
wondering about DDR2 memeroy.... but it looks like the mobo i have picked out can't use DDR2 and i can't find 1 that does.

Harddrive: SATA maxtor 300BG 16mb buffer ||210.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...121653&CatId=0
Is Ultra ATA better then SATA?

Case: Aspire navigator aluminium Mid tower ATX ||165.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...212055&CatId=0

OR:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...287392&CatId=0 ||120.00$||

OR:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...287389&CatId=0 <---- not a mistake ||80.00$||

PSU: i think i might need a better PSU then 500mw for the stuff im putting in here but i have no idea. All 2 cases come with a PSU i think but u guys said case PSU combos are garbage so i might end up selling both of the bonus PSUs and buying 1 seperate i need some adive there.
One of these maybe
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...asp?CatId=1483

sound card:creative labs sounds blaster audigy 2 PCI ||85.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...284189&CatId=0

This is just what im thinking so far its still all open to change and anything at all about the set up u guys wanna say say itz
I think this comes to 2220.00$ but after the other little things it will probly be around 2500.00$ but its alot better then the alienware i was looking at they would want about 3500.00$ for this computer maybe more. Good adivce about the building guys

Monitor: Acer AL 17" with 14ms response time ||220.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...165476&CatId=0

OR: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...086153&CatId=0 ||230.00$||

OR: Benq 17"
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...o=7975&CatId=0 ||240.00$||
Some guy said crts are better for games then LCDs do u guys agree and is it really that much of a difference?

OS: windows XP home ||90.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8&Sku=M17-7500

Viris protection:... do i gotta buy this stuff like ad aware also or can i just download it?

======2540.00$

Mouse: Sweet logitch mousey
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...107911&CatId=0

OR: this awesome razer diamond back plasma edition mousey it just looks so crazy i can't resist ||50.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...334515&CatId=0

Keyboard: this crazy logitech one ||30.00$||
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...379625&CatId=0

OR maybe just a cheaper keyboard mouse combo:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...194800&CatId=0 ||25.00$||

====== as little as 2565.00$ or as much as 2620.00$
Also i have 2 PSUs as bonuses so i can sell 1 and use the other or sell both and buy a new better PSu and i might need to if this ting gets to crazy i think.

Im sure im forgetin some stuff and it will probly be aorund 2800.00$ when i get everything else i think but it sure looks alot cheaper then buying a pre built one sorry for all the reading. Well tell me what you think

If you live in canada, why are you looking at tigerdirect.com instead of tigerdirect.ca?

<edit>Since your on an amarican site all your prices are going to go up when you change it into canadian, plus i don't think tigerdirect.com ships to canada.

'could some1 fill me in about what a winchester processer is and whats the difference from a normal one?'

A Winchester processor simply uses a 90nm making process instead of the standard 110nm i think it is. It means less cooling is required and brings to a more quiet pc. They are also more efficent.
I personally wouldn't aim for a 4000+ though, as this seems rather a high price for such a small gain over one like the 3500+ and wouldn't affect games all that much.

'Would this card be just as good as 2 256mb cards on SLI tho?'

No since you wouldnt have two cores. A 512mb card will be good for storing more textures and might give you a small increase in loading, though its not as good as having 2x those cards with 256mb of memory each.

Hope this helps

It all comes down to... do you have the cash? If you do then go with the 512 and if you don't wanna(or can't) spend that much then go with the 256
