Default low power system

i want to build a really low power system and wanted some ideas for it.

the reasoning behide it is because i want to build a torrent server (i don't want to use windows server) i want all my files to go straight to this computer over my gigabit network.

im looking at an intel atom.

An atom based system would be a good direction to head in, and without going in a very specialised / very expensive direction that's probably the best you'll do. VIA have some similar chips out that I think use slightly less power, but they're older and far less powerful than the atom equivalents.

I'd personally look at an atom board, solid state drive, high efficiency, small power supply (there are some DC ones around that fall into this category) and turn off everything in the BIOS that you're not using (sound, any onboard controllers and suchlike) to keep the power level down.

Never actually done a lower power build for myself but was thinking about it at one point - it's an interesting one and does shift the focus a lot from conventional building. Good luck with it

SSD just doesn't scream practical to me...not yet. I would look for a good, reliable drive. You could check out the WD Green series (lower speed when not in use).

Also, don't make your power supply the biggest concern. Look for one that has a silver or gold rating (efficiency) and one by a reliable manufacturer (antel, pc power and cooling, OCZ, corsair, etc.). Remember that a PSU will only supply what the computer needs...i.e. and 1000 watt psu will not give out 1000 watts at all times.

Fair enough - perhaps SSDs aren't the best way forward. In that case I'd agree with the above, something like the green series may well be your best bet.

They're integrated chips - you'd get them pre-attached to a motherboard. There's nothing wrong with this, and for this sort of a build that's probably what you want.

I'd suggest something like the D945GCLF2 as a board. Perhaps not that specific one depending on what you want - but something along those lines. They're not that expensive either.

As for the video card - why not just copy the videos across and play them on another box? I'm sure you could knock a script / program up that copied them to a network location manually when they were done downloading, and then that box could just sit in the background doing its job all day without you worrying about it

Personally the way I'd run such a box would be to whack linux / unix on it (probably gentoo for this sort of a thing so i can take everything out that I don't need to) and then run whatever I need on it, such as command line torrent-ers.

...unless I've got the wrong end of the stick?
