Well...

I have a little desktop stereo system that isn't a major brand name but it will rock the house. The front and rear channels are clear as is the bass. And the center channel reproduces voice range signals with ease.
It has digital, coaxial, optical, and analog inputs. More bells and whistles than I really need. When I play my classical music, which is in my opinion the true test of a sound system, it reproduces the signal with no perseptable loss or distortion. So to my way of thinking the status symbol thing is a waste of money. Buy what works well to your ears and pocket the differents...
