a bit (8 bits=1 byte) is 'b' isn't it? And a byte is 'B'?

Yes. Bit is the baby so a little "b" is used while Byte is bigger so the big "B" is used. Transmission rates are usually in the mega"bits" while storage size are in the giga"bytes".
