Default Linux Ubuntu 9.04 Help

My friend just installed ubuntu 9.04 on his laptop. The system works fine, but it won't see his wireless router, so he can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions for me to tell him??
If you know how to fix plz list a series of steps.

Does he have the wireless card working and configured in the notebook computer, or is he using ethernet cable?

did he update his system?

can you give use the specs of the laptop he is using. it'd be much easier to help him out knowing what hardware he is dealing with.

Make sure if updates his Ubuntu

Quote:
sudo apt-get install update
and i would also try this, it may work...

Quote:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
let us know if it works...and give us more details about his laptop
