you can get system builder versions of windows for much less than the oem ones.
I just seen one in a magazine vista home premium for $79.99

You can always DL a copy
I used to use Linux but that was waaaay before I started gaming and using the different utilities I use for class now

Depending on what you are doing get the one that fits you the most

You can find Windows pretty cheap sometimes and I'm sure it will go on sale during the holidays

Comes down to preference and requirements.

I play games, so naturally linux is out of the question.
