Laptop will not install OS

I have a gateway M460 that simply shuts down when installing Windows XP.
I tried the installation with two different CDs.
I also installed the hard drive into another M460 installed XP Pro successfully. I then placed the drive back into the original system. After booting to the desktop the system would then shutdown with no error message as though it just lost power.
Assuming a power issue I then took the drive from the other M460 placed it in the one with the problem and the system ran fine.
Where I'm confused is that the hard drive will work in another system but not in the original, and the other systems hard drive works in the broken system and in its own system.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

At what point does it shutdown? What is the last text/screen that you see on your monitor?

My guess is that you just got a bad hard drive...

I think you might have a hard drive controller issue, because if the hard drive was bad, it wouldn't work in the other computer either.
