laptop problems

I have a compaq presario 2500, when I turn it on immediately a white screen comes on, but does nothing, the computer open windows and everything, you can hear the sound.
When I hook up my desktop monitor on it, you can see the windows.
Can someone help me with this?

Reboot and press f8 alot until you see a menu come up. Choose safe mode. If you get a desktop there it might be software related (drivers, resolution too high, etc.).
