Question Laptop Problem

My daughter's Dell Inspiron 1720 is having an issue. It "powers on", but after that, the screen remains blank with only the cursor visible. You can move the cursor around via the touchpad, but nothing else seems to work. Any ideas on how I might fix this? Thank you.

Have you tried tapping F8 as soon as it starts to boot up, that will allow you to get into safe mode and start some simple troubleshooting.

I'll give that a try. What option should I choose when the "Safe Mode" screen appears? I've only ever used this feature to run anti-virus programs. Thanks.

I would have done that, had my IMPATIENT daughter not taken the laptop back to where she got it. It's only several months old so I guess we'll let them figure it out. I was hoping to gain some more knowledge out of this ordeal, but it's not going to happen this time. Thanks to all who responded to my post though.
