Laptop CD/DVD Drive - CDs won't read

My son is having problems with his Acer Extensa Laptop.

The CD/DVD drive isn't working right. DVDs will play fine, but it can't read a CD. It just spins and then tries again and again. No error message or anything.

I'm no techie, but is anything I can try to check on my own before I take it to a repair store?

I went to device manager and it said the drive was working.

try different cds

though its probably busted.

some lappies have electable CD drives so u could get another one if you can replace it.
