Default Labtop video problem

Hey guys, I have a problem on my hands, and am a little buggled as to what the problem is......You see with my computer If I have a distorted video problem, I can troubleshoot it, Open it up, Check the vid card, and the etc. But with this labtop my friend wants me to check out, The video is screwed up..Its running at 16 colors VGA with no higher option. How do you go about troubleshooting a problem like this with a labtop?

What OS is it? How old? Try attaching another monitor to it and the option might pop up or (if it was working before) one of the video drivers got screwed up or were never there. (when attaching the monitor you might have to set up it as a mirror screen thats if your not already trying one) Ill try to get you some more answers.

With 16 colors vga.. I'm gonna say you need to update the video drivers.
