Default L1 L2 cache

I have been working with computers for about 6 months. I now about all the basic parts. The only thing i don't know is L1 and L2 cache. what does it do and how important is it?

Yeah, some people don't like Wikipedia, but personally I think it's a great source of information. You can learn a lot from it.
