It depends how old your version of XP is. XP now comes with service pack 2 and installs it during the windows Installation.

My disk is pre SP2 inclusion, and I've been too lazy to make a slipstreamed disk

What about the antiviruses and firewalls u need to download off of the net?

If you install SP2 you will be good to go to d/load firewalls/av from the net, although XP's firewall is basic, it is good enough to protect you from Blaster or alternately, you can d/load your firewall/av on a different machine and save the files to disk.
