Thats ok. I was already having Windows XP activation problems (see my thread in the operating systems section) and I don't have alot of files to backup anyways so I may give it a whirl and see if I can read the friggin DVR hard drive.

Or you could Just use the Live CD, might be a little slower but it will save you from a format.

Well last night, I was able to access the DVR hard drive. I installed Ubuntu on my computer and was able to do so. There are a series of folders containing files in them with the extensions .STR. These are the largest files that I have come across so one has to assume that these files are the media files.

Upon my googling research I have found that there is no media player that can play these types of files. I was going to transfer one of the files onto my usb hard drive but the operating system was having trouble detecting the drive. Something about the drive needed to be mounted or something.
