Default increasing wireless speed

i've got a linksys router and usb wireless adapter for my PC, and the speed is around 270 kbps. my neighbors internet is about 1.5 mbps (unsecured). im assuming security makes my connection so much slower, but is there anything i can do (other than unsecuring the routher) to increase the speed?

Software and tweaking wise, I'm not too sure. Other than upgrading the router itself, and go to mmo or whatever the new name for the technology (802.11n), you'll have to just do with what you have. Range extenders help but then again that's for range. You could always increase the speed of the internet itself and imporve from there. For ways to increase internet speed, go here: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/col...id,1246,00.asp
Hope this helps...
