IE and MS WORD don't open

I cannot open IE7 on my XP machine. IE has been working fine for months. When I doubleclick on it, the hourglass comes up and sits there forever. Same happens when I use IE7 without add ons. - Restarting computer doesn't help. No new software was installed. Now, here is the funny part: two days ago my MS WORD 07 stopped working - same problem - double click and nothing. All other MS products - Powerpoint, excel... work.
I have McAfee and I also ran spybot - nothing found. Any suggestions?

I would like to push system restore as a last resort solution. Office was reinstalled - same problem.)

Use another computer and get the 30-day trial of NOD32 and run it.

Why are you holding back on system restore? All of your documents will be unchanged, just the programs will be changed.
