Default ibm laptop backlight not working....please help

hello. i have an ibm t42 laptop. the backlight doesn't come on. but i can see the windows logo come on and i can see it starting up. when i click fn f3 the sceen goes off completely. when i click it again the backlight flashes on for a fraction of a second then never stays on....anyone know how to fix this?? ive seen vids on youtube of people pushing the screen back and forth. can you actually fix it like that?? or do i need a new inverter? or is it the motherboard??

thank you in advance!!!
