Default i5 vs. Phenom II

what would you go for? a 3.4GHz AMD Phenom II X4 965 or a 2.66GHz intel i5 750 processor? its really no difference to me because i'll spend the same either way, i just want to know which ones better and which socket type will offer more CPU's to upgrade to in the future

Doesn't matter. Phenom II X4 965 smashes the i5 imo.

i'll be using it for lots of gaming and maybe some photo editing. is the AM3 socket going to be around for quite a while?

or i could upgrade to a core i7 860@2.8GHz for $100, would that run with 4 2GB sticks of RAM?

Too bad it does and no one cares about your opinion. It's all about numbers and facts here.

For editing, I always recommend going with Intel. Stick to the slowest i7 CPU and overclock. Even the i5 will do you extremely well.

im going with the i5 for sure, the overclocked one beat the i7 920 on some of those tests and the mobo im getting says its compatible with both i5 and i7. the i5 is compatible with dual channel RAM, right? the MOBO specs say that it is but i just want to make sure

Simulated i5s and overclocked i5s vs stock 965s... Good benchmarks, lol.

Did you even read anything, or just look at the pictures?

why not spend the extra $30 and get a 920. you can overclock that. and the socket 1366 will last longer than 1156 in terms of upgradeability.

a few reasons why i dont want to do that:
A) i live in canada, the processor alone would cost me $100 more
B) motherboards for the i7 are expensive
C) triple channel RAM is more expensive than dual channel RAM
D) im a high school student so i dont have that much money to spend
