Default I need a reeeeeallly simple definition of rss feeds

along with an example of how they work. I have read half a dozen sites from a google search and am still missing something. It seems to me that RSS feeds are like an automatic emailing service. I can subscribe to a website or blog and have info automatically sent to me when it changes...is that correct? What kind of software do I need to receive this feed? will firefox or outlook do it? If a blog or webpage has 4 different parts can I subscribe to only one part of it? Will the software that i use to receive the feed keep things organized - assuming that I am receiving feeds from multiple origins. If I have my own blog, account with myspace and facebook can I get some kind of plugin to automatically move info from my blog to my account in myspace and facebook?

Sorry for the dumb and wandering questions. I have heard comments made about these things but am still missing the whole picture.
