Default I just installed something I don

I was updating my canon camera software and i got this message saying I needed to install .NET Framework 2.0 from microsoft.
So I did and then it said to upgrade to latest version etc, which is 3.5.

So I did that as well. So what exactly did I just install. I checked wikipedia and it was too technical for me, can someone explain what this program does?

The files are pretty large, like 225 megs.

I am running windows xp Professional with SP2.

I, in what I understand, it makes it so you can run programs made based off of .net better...I think.
