I cant transfer!!!

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question but I am new to this site and I need some help.

I recently bought a new Asus laptop (K52J model) and to transfer the data from my old laptop (a Toshiba, not sure about the model) I bought a portable hard drive. However I am having problems with it. I CANT TRANSFER ANYTHING!!! I can put it on the hard drive but then I can't actually see it on my new laptop. Please help.

Also the portable hard drive is a FreeAgent GoFlex.

I'm not sure if it matters, but are you doing a back-up, or are you just saving some files on the external hard drive?
and is it the same OS version on both systems?

It sounds more like a permissions thing to me. Remove the password that you use to log into the old laptop and try again.

on your new laptop try pluggin in to a different usb slot.

Also make sure hidden folders and system files are shown.

Also how did you copy the files to the usb drive?

Yeah I have just been dragging the files I was on my storage device into it... Im guessing that that is probably wrong way of doing this.
