Get the athlon II x4 and ask for a monitor and a video card.

Just my 2 cents.

Used CPUs do not sell well, and an athlon II x4 is an excellent gaming CPU.

Sweeet!

I bought the Athlon II 240 and my motherboard, so now all I need is my case and RAM I am going to try to get that 2gb dual channel Crucial, then go with that $40 Hurricane. Thanks for all of your help!

Athlon II X4 is $96, but I bet it will be down to $80 by then. That's usually how much he'll spend. I could ask for that from my dad. As for my mom, I'll ask for a monitor. $150 limited.. she usually will do a bit more. For the video card, I can live with what I have/save up. Maybe I'll save up for the CPU and ask for a video card from my dad and see what he gets me.

I'll let you know how everything goes! I'll probably buy the case today or tomorrow, just to explore my other options. It'll probably be the one I get. Then, I'll get that RAM, and I'm set! Hopefully I'll be able to actually build by the end of the month and reach my goal!! Never thought I'd see myself saying that

This realllllly rocks. Do you think everything will go well?? I hope so! I don't need the drivers, do I? Not if I have the hard drives with XP already on them, and I'm sure he put the drivers on those... if not, I'll figure out a way to download them.

OH CRAP I hope everything goes well

That will not work. XP is motherboard specific.

I doubt your dad has the same mobo as you.

EDIT: Don't get a new CPU anytime soon if you bought the athlon x2. Focus an a video card. That vill be by far the biggest performance leap.

You'll need to re-install the OS. An OS bases its ID on the hardware its installed on. Change the hardware and most of the time you'll need to re-install the OS

okay. I'll probably just stick with Ubuntu 9.10 for now, given I already have the CD.. (and it looks cooler!!) Then, if Wine doesn't work for me, I'll see if I have XP laying around the house...

OH and what about this case?? Is it worth $10 to go from the Hurricane to this?

Antec Two Hundred Case

EDIT: OR THESE:

I think spending a little bit more for one of these would give you more long term satisfaction.

Antec 200
50$ shipped
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811129070

NZXT Gamma
$49 shipped
http://www.buy.com/prod/gamma-chas [...] 12598.html

NZXT Beta EVO
$54 shipped
http://www.buy.com/prod/beta-evo-c [...] 12596.html

NZXT M59
$56 shipped
http://www.buy.com/prod/m59-chassi [...] 12597.html

Cooler Master Gladiator 600
$63 shipped
http://www.buy.com/prod/cooler-mas [...] 72040.html

The first 3 really need at least one additional fan and while those prices are the best I could find at the moment they're not really discounted that much so you might be able to get a better deal if you're willing to wait a couple of weeks.

(I'll let you be the judge of some of these case's questionable styling)

Ummm this is what some dude said ^^

Get your dad's CD, use nlite to clone it and get a product key extractor to use on one of those HDDs while its in its original PC.

I can't post a link here but google will help you.

EDIT: antec 200 is tiny.

Hurricane will be better for you.

I'll just use Ubuntu, already tore apart his machines. We got XP on my mac and I am positive we didn't buy it, my stepdad found out a way to get it on there legally (i think he called one of his older sons?) I'll be able to get it, if I need it :O)

I'll get the Hurricane

it's not really motherboard specific, it's more chipset specific because if you swap a hard drive between two systems and they are different motherboard brands (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) but have the same NB (P35, X48, etc.) and SB (ICH9, ICH9R, ICH10, etc.) chipsets the hard drive will work fine, if his dad's system has the same chipsets it should work...

that's a huge reason why I love Win7, you can swap motherboards out as much as you want, basically an upgrader's (or downgrader's) dream...

Yeah...

I'm going to ask all my friends if they have Windows 7 and if I can "borrow" their CDs.. ha. Is that legal?
