Default HP problems

First time posting here. Followed a link from RaceLineCentral. My problem is this:

Friend gave me an HP pavillion 351W because it wouldn't boot. I could not access the protected area to reinstall Windows.

I replaced HD with one I had laying around with Windows 98 installed (which if I didn't mind)

Computer boots to Windows. Cannot change display settings past default, cannot get Internet to connect, and USB is messed up.

I cannot get to BIOS (tried F8, Delete, F10) to change from onboard Ethernet and video.

I can install new Ethernet card, Video card and USB card, but not being able to deactivate onboard versions, will it work?

This is 3rd computer I have around, so no big deal if not able to use. Was wanting to use for paint program so I can paint my cars for racing. Just wanted to take some stress off racing computer.

Thanks in advance for any help.
