Default how to speed up rendering

hope someone can help me,, i am an almost computer illiterate parent.
my son is doing a lot of gaming video clips on his youtube and he as also been partnered ,,he is currently using a standard 400 desktop from pcworld (sorry that is as much as i know ,i will get details tomoro). and is struggling with slow rendering.
we are hoping to buy him a new custom built in late january2013 and have a budget of around 1500 ($2250).
right my question is..is there a way of speeding up the rendering on the present pc ( i know you are going to need to know more spec)to make things faster until we can afford the custom build.
budget is 100-200.
thanks mark
