Default How to safely clean the registry?

Could you please explain me how to safely clean the registry, which programs to use in the process? There are so many registry cleaner programs out there it is hard to figure out which one to use. My number one priority is safety! I do not care if the clean is not perfect, I do not want my system to crash after the registry clean.

What is the difference between registry cleaner and registry compressor software? Should I use both? Could you please also recommend a safe compressor software!
