Default How to format C:

How do you format the hard drive. I'm giving it to a charity and I want to format the HD before it leaves.
I'm not much of a puter guy so step by step would be appreciated.
Thanks Smoky

well, if you still have your windows xp cd you can enter the recovery consol by pressing "R" before it starts the installation, and then type "format c:"

no you have to use a program called killdisk because formatting doesnt destroy any data.

Deleting the partition erases the files etc, putting a new partition and formatting it overwrites the stuff.

edit: it can still be recovered though, but the only way to really destroy all of the data so no one will ever be able to know what stuff was on the hdd is to throw the hdd into an active volcano or something. You can even open it and smash the disc into pieces, but the data is still there.
