how dus a person go about finding out the interface they are running?

Ahhh ok - Now i get it!

The easiest way is open your computer case and locate your hardrive:



If the plug going into it looks like THIS:



It's IDA (ATA)

And if it looks like this:



It's SATA.

ok so i have ata-5 so i can run ata-6 hard drives but not sata drives correct?
