Default How does Steam work?

How exactly does Steam work? I have it installed and I've been playing the HL2 demo. The HL2 demo isn't actually installed on my comp is it? Don't I just download it everytime I start Steam up?

I'm thinking about selling my computer and buying a new one. If I buy the HL2 Silver Edition ting through Steam can I play the games that it comes with on any computer as long as I sign in?

You can download steam on any pc, log in, and then download the games you want from the games you bought.
