Ask him to download and run this software.

CPU-Z
identify your CPU and system details

Have him try Crucial's System Scanner. It will scan and analyze his system and tell him exactly what type of memory he has installed and what memory will be compatible with his computer.

Another nifty program is CPU-Z. It will tell him all about the CPU, motherboard and memory.

There are ways to see how much RAM he has, but I don't think he can find out what type of RAM he is using or what speed it's running at in Windows.

A lot of time, if you take out your old RAM, it will tell you on the sticker. All of my RAM has that so it makes it easy to identify. You just have to take it out of your system and see.
