Default help with trojan!!!

ok, so i went on my mom's old PIII 800mhz computer because i didn't feel like turning mine on, and im surfin computerforums, and norton comes up with a warning "a virus has been detected on your computer". the virus was download.trojan

it said could not acces file, so i click ok, and its like "could not delete file". so i reboot my computer into safe mode thinking i would get rid of it. i turn on norton antivirus, and its like "norton antivirus might not have full functionality in safe mode, do you want to perform a scan?". i click yes, and nothing happens. what can i do to save my moms computer? yeah, i can format, but my mom wouldnt be happy. and please suggest thing having nothing to do with internet.

UPDATE: ok, i went on it, and it actually scanned, but no virusses showed up. so what happened?
