help with remote desktop

can someone tell me how to connect to a computer in the same workgroup in my house. How do i find out the domain? and the computer's name is FAMILY

when i connect with "192.168.1.1, FAMILY", it says "invalid server name"

Just try the IP address, OR the computer name- not both.
Also, look into VNC, a free utility that is relatively easy to install, and works great. Better than RDP IMO.

i tried vnc, but its too difficult to set up. and what do i put as the domain?

You don't need a domain. It's a home network, right? Make sure each computer has a different name, and are apart of the same workgroup. But even that don't matter if your using RDP. You also may need to setup your router to port forward 3389 to the IP address you're trying to go to. Do you want to connect to the computer, like to see the screen on your screen (like RDP or VNC) or do you want to just be able to access the computer?

Also make sure you allow users to connect via RDP on the computer you are trying to connect to. Also, both need to be XP Pro.

yup, everything on that checklist is already done. have no clue why it doesnt work. and i want to be able to control the other computer.

the computer you are connecting to has to have xp pro on it...
may i suggest www.logmein.com that is what i use

I used logmein before... I never paid anything I think they have a free service/premium service.
