try repairing windows via the windows boot cd that should re install all drivers

Just all the patches, hotfixes, and updates. None of your files will be bothered. But I personally think you're going about this in the wrong manner.
To get to safe mode just boot up the system while tapping the F8 key. When you get to the menu select the one that says safe mode with networking. Once it boots up go to the nvidia site and get the drivers. Install them. Shut the system down. Install the new card. Boot to the bios and disable the onboard video. Save and exit. Let it boot up. If that doesn't fix it then the card may be bad.
