Default Help! NTVDM CPU?

My computer keeps getting black popup boxes accompanied by a normal grey box that says a file location in my Local Settings and then "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0553 IP:01d4 OP:63 68 65 2f 31 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." It gives me the option to close or ignore. Neither appears to do anything, and these happen every half hour or so.

What's going on and how do I stop this?
