Default help for a newbie

hello all,

I will admit that I know virtually nothing when it comes to computer programming and editing, so for those of you who do please don't be bothered by my question if its answer is very simple.

What I want to know is if there is a program that I can get a hold of that I can use to edit text within a program. (i.e change the word 'menu' to 'apricot') I would prefer something user friendly if at all possible as I am not prolific in programming. If someone could help me out here or just point me in the right direction I would be grateful!

yea paint would only allow you to change the text on a screenshot though. meaning the actual program would still be the same
