prime95 is a good program for testing stability.
And check your mobo manufacturers website for some kind of monitoring programs.

I've found that everest sucks when it comes to temperatures. Told me that my vid card was about 20C warmer than what nVidias own program said.

Anybody have any idea if an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 GHz is overclockable? It is on my old desktop.

cpus are always overclockable. It's the mobo that you might have problems with.
