Have you got another hard drive you can try installing Windows on. I've had this trouble before with a laptop and I changed hard drives and it worked fine. Read this Error message when you try to install Windows Vista on a computer that has uninitialized hard disks: "This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk", Its for Windows Vista but will work for Windows 7..

He said it works fine from DVD just not from USB so it's not likely the hard drive.

If you can get it to boot from DVD then why are you worried about it? Sounds like the USB doesn't have the right drivers on it for the hard disk (sata drivers maybe).
