Help me trouble-shoot my Audio!

I was recently given a 7y.o. toshiba laptop,great condition.I don't have any audio.I don't have any of the click,pop or other sounds usually heard for different tasks,nor can I get any audio with the Flash player or quicktime.I have been in the control panel and don't see anything obvious ,and when I click the audio icon in the taskbar it displays it as max audio level.

Can you give me a way to troubleshoot this to fix or find the problem?

Check to make sure the default sound player is set correctly.

My Toshiba notebook computer has a manual volume control on the front of the computer. Does yours have the volume control on the front? Is it turned all the way down?

It was the damn wheel (on the side)!
Didn't think to look on the side for a control.

Mine is on the front. I had the same thing happen to me, no audio and everything looked fine, then I remembered the volume control. It is a nice feature as long as you remember it is there!
