Help me build a PC.

While money may be no serious issue, do you really want to build a Cadillac (I guess that phase does not mean as much these days - substitute Rolls Royce) or a resonably price but high performance system - say a Corvette - where most of the money goes to performance? And to you want just outstanding perfomrance or all the bells and whistles? Are you ready to devote the last 30% of the cost for just a 5% increase in performance?

But first back to the basics:
What applications do you use and what games do you play?
What settings do you want to be able to play?
What is your target budget level?

I agree that it might be worth waiting for the LGA2011 socket platform.

The choice of case is pretty much a personal one of style after ensuring it has the size you need and provides for good air flow. I recommend just going to newegg and scrolling through the pictures first to see what you like. Newegg has the best navigation and information of any vendor site - one reason they are used so much. Just go to this page and scroll throgh them. You might use the price selector to get cases in the $100 - $300 range which will limit the options to about 150 case or 5 pages. Once you find the style you like - you can search on Google for reviews. Or just post here and ask and people can tell you if it is a good case -airflow and otherwise - or recommend better options in your style:

Of course you could also look at whatever online sites you can buy from - or better yet just check them out in person at a good video store with a large supply of cases - if you have any close.

To learn a little more about video card selection, I recommend this site that has a lot of good information about selecting video cards and links to some excellent resources

You might also prep yourself for the build by looking at some of these resources:

Mainly for gaming, all types. I'm gonna use the PC for me and the xbox for friends and multiplayer.

A friend of mine would slap me for even saying this, but why the 990x? The platform is dying, and if you really want the best of the best, grabbing an i7 based on Sandy Bridge (2600k for example) is going to give you 90-100% of the performance in lightly threaded tasks that the 990x does, and if you truly want to maximize the performance, wait until LGA2011 hits later this year from Intel, and own something truly revolutionary, since as you said, money is no object.

990FX is a new platform AM3+...bulldozer will be out in the coming months. 8 core for a fraction of the price of intel's hexacore. I won't lie, if I had the money for intel, I'd go with that...but until then, AMD works very well.

Very...especially for the higher end models, like the dual processor concept Asus had at computex. I mean you're talking about the newest of the new chipset from intel. Four channel memory, intergrated usb 3.0, the whole nine. Not to mention the cpu's will start at 600 and go up way over a thousand. The good news is that, hopefully, the last generation of i7s will drop in price a little bit. After all, who'd buy a 1000 dollar six core that's been updated by another 1000 dollar six core that's all around better. But then, looking at Intel's past when the six core gulftown came out, they kept the price of the old quad core extreme...so maybe that won't happen. In any case, if you can afford the best there is right now, you'll afford the best there is when the LGA2011 comes out.
